Divian Ladwa (“Detectorists”) also joins the cast of the film, which chronicles the life of Brierley (Patel), who at age five was separated from his mother in India only to find her 25 years later. Kidman plays his adoptive mother Sue, who moved the boy to Hobart, Australia. A score of other famous Indian actors will be seen, including Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Priyanka Bose, Tannishtha Chatterjee and Deepti Naval.
Luke Davies (Candy, Life) adapted Brierley’s true story “A Long Way Home” for director Garth Davis (Top of the Lake), which has begun shooting in India and will move to Melbourne and Hobart in mid-April.
Emile Sherman, Iain Canning and Angie Fielder produce Lion for See-Saw Films in association with Sunstar Entertainment and Aquarius Films.
Mara will next be seen in Terrence Malick’s Weightless, opposite Cate Blanchett in Todd Haynes’ Carol, and as Tiger Lily in Joe Wright’s summer blockbuster Pan. Wenham, who appeared opposite Kidman in Moulin Rouge! and Australia, will co-star in the BBC Drama “Banished” and stars in the romance Force of Destiny.
