ComingSoon.net attended the press day earlier today for Noah Baumbach’s new comedy While We’re Young, starring Ben Stiller, Naomi Watts, Adam Driver and Amanda Seyfried, and we’ll have those interviews to share soon but at the tail-end of our interview with Stiller, we wanted to ask about the upcoming Zoolander 2, which was just announced a couple weeks back after years of trying to make it happen.
The original comedy opened in the fall of 2001 and while it only grossed $60 million in theaters, it became a bit of a cult classic with its fancies growing each year since then. Stiller has been getting asked for years if and when he might return to the role of Derek Zoolander, but a lot of factors kept it from happening.
In the video below, the actor/director talks about the turning point that got the ball rolling for the sequel, saying it was a gradual process from when they first wrote the script for a sequel in 2005:
“Last year, we started looking at it again and it seemed like the confluence of events of everybody wanting to do do it, and it got to a point where it actually came together. And it’s exciting to finally be able to talk about it, too.”
Look for more from our interviews with Stiller, Baumbach and Seyfried talking While We’re Young later this week before its limited release on March 27. Zoolander 2 is scheduled for release on February 12, 2016.
