Julia Roberts has signed on to produce and is attached to star in the film adaptation of Margot Berwin’s upcoming novel “Hothouse Flowers” for Sony’s Columbia Pictures.
Roberts will play a recently divorced woman who is dissatisfied with her job at a Manhattan ad agency and goes off on an adventure that takes her to places she never expected to go.
The studio bought the rights to the book by Nerve.com writer Berwin. The project, however, has no writer or script because of the almost 3-month-old writers strike.
Joe Roth (The Great Debaters) and Suzanne and Jennifer Todd (Across the Universe) also are producing.
Roberts most recently starred in Charlie Wilson’s War and recently wrapped the indie family drama Fireflies in the Garden. Her next project is Duplicity.
Upcoming projects for Roth include Hellboy II: The Golden Army and, with Team Todd, Alice in Wonderland.
