Suicide Squad Sets Its Sights on Joel Kinnaman

Word first broke last month that, due to scheduling conflicts, Tom Hardy would no longer be playing Rick Flagg in Warner Bros. Pictures’ upcoming Suicide Squad movie. Jake Gyllenhaal was said to have been offered the part shortly thereafter, but the Nightcrawler actor subsequently passed on the role. Now, TheWrap reports that the studio may have found their man in RoboCop star Joel Kinnaman. According to the outlet, Kinnaman is not yet a lock, but he is the current favorite.

Written and directed by Fury and End of Watch‘s David Ayer, Suicide Squad is set to star Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Jared Leto as The Joker, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Cara Delevingne as Enchantress, and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller. The film will hit theaters on August 5, 2016.

Kinnaman is also well known for headlining Daniel Espinosa’s 2010 Swedish actioner Easy Money and for starring on the crime drama series “The Killing.” His upcoming projects include Espinosa’s Child 44 (in which he stars opposite Hardy), Terrence Malick’s Knight of Cups, and Jaume Collet-Serra’s latest Liam Neeson teaming, Run All Night.

Originally created by Robert Kanigher and Ross Andru back in 1959, Suicide Squad‘s film adaptation will set up shop in Toronto, Canada at their Pinewood extension starting this month. Following two months of pre-production, the film will shoot from April until September for a August 5, 2016 release.
