Dan Kunka to Pen Screenplay for Live-Action Space Invaders

spaceinvaders_telegamesThe feature film based on classic arcade game Space Invaders is dropping down and reversing direction as it aims to blast its way to theaters thanks to the imagination of writer Dan Kunka (12 Rounds), who Deadline reports will pen the script for Warner Bros. Pictures.

Kunka is a hot Blacklist writer who gained traction with his 52-page, dialogue-free spec script Yellowstone Falls, in which wolves battle zombies. That script was sold to QED in a bidding war, while another action script titled Bermuda Triangle sold to Warner Bros. and producer Charles Roven.

Space Invaders was designed by Tomohiro Nishikado and released in 1978. The game was later licensed for production in the United States by Midway. Warners began the process of acquiring the rights back in 2010, while the iconic spaceships from the game will feature as opponents in this summer’s classic 8-bit video game-themed adventure Pixels.

Akiva Goldsman, Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell have all signed on as producers of Space Invaders, with Jesse Ehrman overseeing for Warner Bros. Pictures.
