The New York Film Critics Online (NYFCO), of which ComingSoon.net’s Edward Douglas is a member, gathered at O’Neals’ Restaurant in New York City for their annual awards meeting where Paul Thomas Anderson’s fifth film There Will Be Blood won five of the group’s awards including Best Picture (tied with Julian Schnabel’s The Diving Bell and the Butterfly), Director, Actor for Daniel Day-Lewis’ performance and two technical awards for Cinematography (Robert Elswit) and Film Music (Jonny Greenwood).
The French animated film Persepolis was honored with awards in both the Foreign Language (tied with The Lives of Others) and in the Animated categories, while Sarah Polley’s Away From Her received an award for actress Julie Christie, as well as for Polley’s debut feature as a director.
Cate Blanchett and Javier Bardem took the Supporting Actress and Actor categories for Todd Haynes’ I’m Not There and Joel and Ethan Coen’s No Country for Old Men, respectively, while Juno star Ellen Page was noted as the group’s Breakthrough Performer. Sidney Lumet’s Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead received an honor in the controversial Ensemble Cast category, while Michael Moore’s Sicko was considered the year’s top Documentary.
