The Interview Will be Available to Stream on VOD As Well

Yesterday, Sony Pictures announced that they would be releasing the Seth Rogen/James Franco comedy The Interview in select cities starting Christmas Day, lining up roughly 300 theaters across the country. (You can see the full list at the bottom of this article.)

For those wanting to see the movie who aren’t located near any of those theaters, Sony has also gone ahead to release the movie via VOD streaming on a number of platforms, including Google Play, YouTube Movies and Microsoft’s Xbox Video. It’s available to download/stream right now!

According to the Sony release:

“As of 10:00 a.m. PST, the film will be available to rent in HD on Google Play, YouTube Movies, Microsoft’s Xbox Video and the dedicated website www.seetheinterview.com at a price of $5.99. The film can also be purchased in HD for $14.99.”

Variety is also reporting that Sony is in talks with Netflix to stream the movie via that popular pay service.

Since this is a story that is evolving with almost hourly news, check back here for any further updates about Sony’s plans for the movie that they’re doing their best to get out there despite the lack of support from the country’s biggest theater chains.

This is a huge announcement by Sony, because it makes The Interview the first day-and-date VOD release by a major studio ever, and it could catch on with other studios depending on how well it does.
