Cate Blanchett Eyes Disaster Thriller Cascade

She’ll be back on the big screen in two weeks as part of the ensemble cast of Peter Jackson’s Middle-earth finale, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, but, according to a story today at The Hollywood Reporter, two-time Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett is said to be eyeing a role in the upcoming 20th Century Fox disaster thriller Cascade . The film has also scored a director in 2 Guns helmer Baltasar Kormakur.

Although the title is new, plans for Cascade were first announced back in 2012. The film is said to be inspired by the 2003 BBC drama documentary The Day Britain Stopped. The original program, designed as mockumentary about an imagined event, takes place in the very near future (later that same year). As in the original, Cascade will focus on an oil tanker collision that sets off an international crisis.

Blanchett, whose careers has had her playing everything from Queen Elizabeth I to Bob Dylan, would play the tanker captain.

Ridley Scott, Garrett Basch, Michael Schaefer and Steve Zaillian, are all producing the project, which features a screenplay by Kieran Fitzgerald (The Homesman).

Kormakur’s next, meanwhile, is on the way to theaters September 18, 2015. Titled Everest, the film is inspired by the incredible true events surrounding a treacherous attempt to reach the summit of the world’s highest mountain.
