Ahead of Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance debuting at Cannes, Mubi has picked the body horror movie.
The Substance Lands at Mubi
Mubi is a distributor, production banner, and streamer for arthouse films and has the rights for North America, the U.K., Ireland, Germany, Austria, Turkey, India, Latin America, and Benelux, where it will be released theatrically this year. Mubi’s The Match Factory will handle all other territories.
The Substance stars Demi Moore, Margaret Qualley, and Dennis Quaid. The film is set to premiere at Cannes Film Festival, and the Cannes website offers up some details on what to expect from the movie.
“Have you ever dreamed of a better version of yourself? You should try this new product: The Substance. It changed my life. With The Substance, you can generate another version of yourself, younger, more beautiful, more perfect… Just share the time. One week for one, one week for the other. A perfect balance of seven days. Easy, isn’t it?
“If you follow the instructions, what could go wrong?”
Coralie Fargeat made a strong statement in 2017’s Revenge, which shows Jen’s (Matilda Lutz) romantic getaway with her wealthy (married) boyfriend (Kevin Janssens) disrupted when his friends arrive for an impromptu hunting trip. Tension mounts at the house until the situation culminates unexpectedly, leading to a violent gore-soaked revenge spree.
Director of photography on The Substance is Benjamin Kracun (Promising Young Woman), co-editors are Fargeat, Jerome Eltabet (Revenge), and Valentin Féron. The score is composed by Raffertie (I May Destroy You), Production Design is led by Stanislas Reydellet (Le Bal Des Folles), and Costume Design is by Emmanuelle Youchnovski (Café de Flore, La belle époque).
