The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants director Derek Drymon says the upcoming animated film will feature nudity.
On Instagram, Drymon posted about The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants, a new animated film releasing in 2025. “I’m lucky to be working with an incredible crew on the new SpongeBob movie, releasing in theaters on December 19th 2025! (Which is right around the corner in animation terms),” Drymon’s caption reads.
In the comments, one fan asked if SpongeBob will be “nekkid” the whole time given the title of the film, to which Drymon responded, “There WILL be nudity.”

What do we know about about The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants?
The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants will be the fourth theatrically released SpongeBob SquarePants movie following 2004’s The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, 2015’s The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, and 2020’s The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run.
Plot details remain under wraps at this time; although, in another Instagram post, Drymon confirmed Tom Kenney and Bill Fagerbakke, who voice SpongeBob and Patrick Star, have started recording lines for the film. “A big thrill for me to be working with these two very funny men again,” Drymon wrote.
Drymon wrote and was heavily involved in a number of SpongeBob SquarePants episodes. He also directed 2022’s Hotel Transylvania 4: Transformania and a handful of animated shorts, including 2020’s Minions Holiday Special and 2021’s Monster Pets: A Hotel Transylvania Short.
Another SpongeBob movie, Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie, is also expected to be released in 2024. Along with Kenny and Sandy Cheeks voice actor Carolyn Lawrence, the voice cast of the movie includes Johnny Knoxville, Wanda Sykes, Craig Robinson, Grey DeLisle, Ilia Isorelýs Paulino, and Matty Cardarople.
The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants releases in United States theaters on December 19, 2025.
