Mattel is reportedly developing various film projects on their other IP following the success of Barbie, and the company also isn’t saying no to the idea of potential crossovers.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, producer Robbie Brenner was asked about crossover potential for future properties in development.
Brenner said that there was “so much” potential, and joked that Barbie could live with Hot Wheels if needed.
“There’s so much crossover potential. Certainly Barbie can live with Hot Wheels and Matchbox and Major Matt Mason,” said Brenner. “The other day someone came to visit, and we were giving them a tour and we were showing them the Basquiat upstairs and the Warhol. It happened to have been Halloween, so all of the kids were trick-or-treating [in offices] and in costumes. I thought to myself, this is a setup for a movie, a kid’s heist film where they steal the Basquiat and Warhol. That’s a good Mattel movie.”
Mattel reportedly working on various films about other IPs
Mattel Films also has a number of other live-action films currently in various stages of development, including a Hot Wheels movie produced by J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions, a Magic 8 Ball movie, a Polly Pocket film directed by Lena Dunham, and even a Barnie project that is reportedly said to be an “A24-type” of movie.
As far as more Barbie, it’s unclear whether or not the film will receive a sequel. Despite making more than $1 billion at the international box office, star Margot Robbie and director Greta Gerwig seem unwilling to return for another film.
“I think we put everything into this one,” Robbie said to AP last month. “We didn’t like built it to be a trilogy or something. Greta put everything into this movie, so I can’t imagine what would be next.”
