Priscilla: Sofia Coppola Was Not Allowed to Use Elvis Presley Music in Movie

Director Sofia Coppola revealed that she was not allowed to use any of Elvis Presley’s music in Priscilla.

Coppola is writing and directing a new biographical drama movie starring Cailee Spaeny as Priscilla Presley, the wife of the King of Rock and Roll. “When teenage Priscilla Beaulieu meets Elvis Presley, the man who is already a meteoric rock-and-roll superstar becomes someone entirely unexpected in private moments: a thrilling crush, an ally in loneliness, a vulnerable best friend,” reads the official synopsis.

The Lost in Translation director revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that there are no Elvis songs in the movie. She asked Elvis Presley Enterprises for the rights to use the music, but was turned down. “They don’t like projects that they haven’t originated, and they’re protective of their brand,” Coppola says. “But that made us be more creative.”

Instead, the film will feature Phoenix covers of classic songs. It is worth noting that the 2022 Elvis movie starring Austin Butler used Presley’s music, approved by the estate.

When is the Priscilla release date?

The film will release on October 27, 2023, by A24.

The film will star Cailee Spaeny (On the Basis of Sex, Vice) as the titular character, with Elvis being portrayed by Jacob Elordi (Euphoria, The Kissing Booth).

The cast also includes Raine Monroe Boland as Lisa Marie Presley, Emily Mitchell as Lisa Marie Presley, Jorja Cadence as Patsy Presley, Rodrigo Fernandez-Stoll as Alan “Hog Ears” Fortas, Luke Humphrey as Terry West, and Dagmara Domińczyk.
