J.J. Abrams recently gave an update on Mattel’s planned Hot Wheels movie.
What is the latest Hot Wheels movie update?
During a recent profile on the ongoing success of the Barbie movie, The Hollywood Reporter notes that Warner Bros. Discovery is still attempting to move along with its Hot Wheels movie. That includes meeting with directors.
THR notes that the project is “out to directors,” despite no script having been written as of yet.
THR also mentions that producers at Mattel are hoping to keep the project’s momentum going, even with most of Hollywood at a standstill due to the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. However, due to the DGA (the Directors Guild of America) ratifying a new contract in June, they are able to make deals with studios.
The news comes just a few weeks after J.J. Abrams — who is set to be a producer on the upcoming film — gave an update on it. Speaking to the New Yorker, Abrams described the movie as “emotional and grounded and gritty.” Robbie Brenner, head of Mattel Films, also said that the film will have “real characters that you can relate to, that are three-dimensional, that have emotional journeys.”
