Rumors of a potential Prey 2 have been floating around for some time, and according to director Dan Trachtenberg, conversations on a sequel even took place while on the set of the first movie.
Speaking to The Playlist recently, Trachtenberg was asked about a potential sequel to the Predator prequel. Specifically, Trachtenberg was questioned about whether or not he would be involved in a sequel if one happens.
The director said he couldn’t talk about it, but that “exciting conversations” between himself, the studio, and writer Patrick Alson took place while they were finishing up production on the film.
“I can’t really say anything about that right now, but I’ll say while we were finishing the movie, we were having really exciting conversations,” Trachtenberg said. “The studio, myself, the writer, and the producers about what crazy things could we do next. And I’ve never stopped, no one stopped thinking about how cool things could be going forward.”
What was Prey about?
Prey was released on Hulu in 2022 and served as a prequel to the Predator franchise. It starred Amber Midthunder as Naru, a young Comanche woman who goes toe-to-toe against a Predator. While the exact popularity of the film is unknown due to it being released on a streaming platform, the film was praised by both critics and audiences.
The cast was comprised almost entirely of Native and First Nation’s talent, including Midthunder (The Ice Road), newcomer Dakota Beavers, Stormee Kipp (Sooyii), Michelle Thrush (The Journey Home), and Julian Black Antelope (Tribal). It also features Dane DiLiegro (American Horror Stories) as the Predator.
Prey was directed by Trachtenberg from a screenplay written by Aison. It is produced by John Davis, Jhane Myers, and Marty Ewing, with Lawrence Gordon, Ben Rosenblatt, James E. Thomas, John C. Thomas, and Marc Toberoff serving as executive producers.
The prequel is available on Hulu entirely in Comanche as a language option, or with Comanche subtitles, which is the first time a feature-length movie on a direct-to-consumer streaming platform has been fully available in the Comanche language.
