On the heels of a report that Jared Leto is in contention for the role of The Joker in Warner Bros.’ upcoming Suicide Squad film, Collider reports that Margot Robbie has joined the cast in the role of Harley Quinn. Robbie has been in the mix for a role in the film for a few weeks now, along with the likes of Tom Hardy and Will Smith, though it was unknown at the time what her role would be.
A previous report on the film stated that the line-up for Task Force X in the movie would include the super strong Blockbuster, the self-replicating Multiplex, the speedster Jaculi, the illusion-casting Mindboggler, the original Captain Boomerang George Harkness, the animal mimicker Vixen, and Floyd Lawton aka Deadshot; however, with both The Joker and Harley Quinn reportedly being involved, it’s safe to say the script for Suicide Squad has been written to include additional characters from the DCU.
Harley Quinn has been a staple member of the Suicide Squad since DC Comics relaunched with “The New 52” back in 2011 and even retained her membership on the team after that series was cancelled and resurrected as “The New Suicide Squad.” As for her sweetheart “Mister J,” it’s unclear what part The Joker would have in the film as the character has never been a member of the Suicide Squad due to his unpredictable tendencies, but given the nature of Harley Quinn’s origin it’s probably best to include the two of them in the film.
Set to be directed by David Ayer, and potentially featuring the return of Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor, Suicide Squad is set for release on August 5, 2016.
