Academy Award-nominee Rooney Mara (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) and Ben Mendelsohn (The Place Beyond the Pines) are set to headline the upcoming relationship drama Blackbird, which will mark the feature debut of theater director Benedict Andrews (“The Maids”).
Blackbird follows two people who once had a passionate affair meet again fifteen years later. Ray (Mendelsohn) is confronted with his past when Una (Rooney Mara) arrives unannounced at his office, and they are forced to revisit their relationship. Ray has made a new life for himself. Una is looking for answers. What follows in this emotional thriller is an unflinching excavation of damaged love. The consequences are shattering.
The film is adapted by David Harrower from his Olivier Award-winning play of the same title, and produced by Jean Doumanian and Patrick Daly, who made August: Osage County and the upcoming thriller Galveston from “True Detective” writer Nic Pizzolatto. Shooting on Blackbird is scheduled to commence in the UK during the summer of 2015.
Mara will next appear opposite Christian Bale and Ryan Gosling in Terrence Malick’s untitled 2015 film as well as playing Tiger Lily opposite Hugh Jackman’s Blackbeard in Joe Wright’s Pan. Perhaps best known as John Daggett in The Dark Knight Rises, Australian actor Mendelsohn will next be seen in Ridley Scott’s Exodus: Gods and Kings and in Black Sea opposite Jude Law.
