According to Deadline, Captain Marvel directing duo Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck have been tapped to helm eOne and Macro’s upcoming drama film Freaky Tales, which is said to feature four interconnected stories set in 1987 Oakland, CA. This marks the pair’s first major movie project since working on Marvel Studios’ 2019 blockbuster film.

In addition to directing the project, Freaky Tales will also written by Boden and Fleck. The film is reportedly “a love letter to the music, movies, sports, politics, people, places, and memories which Fleck grew up with during the 1980s. On the surface, each story appears to exist in a world familiar to our own, but the Oakland of Freaky Tales hovers just beyond our knowable universe. Sure, you can reach out and touch it, but it’s going to be very sticky.”
The film will be produced by Jelani Johnson and Poppy Hanks with James Lopez, Charles D. King, and hip-hop legend Todd Shaw, aka Too $hort, set as executive producers. According to the outlet’s sources, the script will be inspired by Too $hort’s music in the ’80s.

Boden and Fleck have been collaborating together since 2006. However, their first joint directorial project is the 2008 sports drama Sugar. Before Captain Marvel, they directed two comedy drama films, including It’s Kind of a Funny Story and Mississippi Grind , as well as episodes for TV shows like The Affair, Billions, and Mrs. America.
