Illumination/Universal’s Minions: The Rise of Gru snared a record-breaking $125.1 million over the 4-day Fourth of July weekend (besting the domestic total of Lightyear in one go), according to Deadline, proving that moviegoing is still very much alive and well. While $107 million earned over its first three days is only the second-best opening of the Despicable Me/Minions franchise, the $202.2 million worldwide tally should be enough to make executives dance to the night away.
Minions will have the animated marketplace to itself for a few weeks before the release of Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank on July 15, followed by DC League of Super-Pets on July 29.
Meanwhile, Top Gun: Maverick, with $1.1 billion worldwide, has just become producer Jerry Bruckheimer’s highest-grossing movie to date, surpassing the $1.066 billion earned by Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest in 2006. Wow. Domestically, the Tom Cruise vehicle has brought in an astonishing $570.9 million.
Elvis held firm over the weekend, dropping just -41% in its second frame to bring in $23.5 million over the 4-day holiday; and bringing its domestic total to $71.8 million. While Jurassic World earned another $19.7 million to raise its domestic tally to $335.8 million. Worldwide, the dinosaur epic has amassed over $800 million.
This week sees the release of the anticipated Thor: Love and Thunder, which earned a glowing review from our site.
