Joaquin Phoenix in Contention for Doctor Strange Role?

Though a previous report indicated Marvel Studios was looking at both Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Hardy to take on the lead role in Doctor Strange, TheWrap now brings word that three-time Academy Award nominee Joaquin Phoenix is being considering for the role. No deal is in place but check back here for any future announcements, which might come Saturday evening during Marvel Studios’ San Diego Comic-Con panel.

Doctor Strange is based on the character created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, who made his first appearance in 1963’s “Strange Tales” #110. It follows the adventures of Stephen Strange (nodded at in this year’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier), a brilliant neurosurgeon who, following a car accident, loses precision in his hands. His quest to regain his former skills sets Strange on a path to become the “Master of the Mystic Arts.”

Set to be directed by Scott Derrickson from a script by Jon Spaihts, a specific release date for Doctor Strange has not yet been set, though Marvel has a number of placeholder dates already set for a number of mystery films.
