Eternals Holds Steady, Clifford Exceeds Expectations at the Domestic Box Office

Disney/Marvel’s Eternals held up surprisingly well at the domestic box office where the superhero epic earned $27.4M (-62%) in its second week of release, per Deadline. That decline is on par with Ant-Man and the Wasp and Spider-Man: Homecoming, which dropped 62% in their sophomore frames, but certainly not the disaster many expected. Through ten days, Chloe Zhao’s film has collected $118.7M.

Clifford the Big Red Dog gobbled up $20M over its first five days, which was better than the $15M-$17M Paramount/eOne had expected. The film also debuted on Paramount+, which may or may not have hampered its ticket sales.

The only other big news was Venom: Let There Be Carnage, which became the second movie during the pandemic era to cross $200M at the domestic box office behind Disney/Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Worldwide, Venom has amassed $30M.

This week sees the release of the highly anticipated Ghostbusters Afterlife, and your guess is as good as mine how that film — releasing only in theaters — will fare at the box office.
