Ever since the “X-Men” franchise gained immense popularity, there has always been talk of doing spin-off films to focus on individual characters. Wolverine is the only one to have achieved this feat so far, but in the past there were plans for a Magneto spin-off as well as the much clamored for Deadpool film. Now it seems that, following changes at the studio, we could be looking at more solo “X-Men” films.
“There was a regime [at the studio] that didn’t see the worth in [spin-offs], and the current people who run Fox understand, embrace it, and we’re going to do right by it,” producer Lauren Shuler Donner told EW. “I’d like to do Gambit. I’d like to do Deadpool. We’ll see. There’s a lot of really great characters.”
X-Men: Days of Future Past screenwriter Simon Kinberg had a different idea – a Mystique film lead by “The Hunger Games” star Jennifer Lawrence.
“I love what Jen Lawrence has done with her, and I feel like because she is in such a crowded ensemble, there’s so much more opportunity if you were to follow her solo.”
The last batch of announcements from Fox about the future of their Marvel franchises revealed a third “Wolverine” film, a sequel to Josh Trank’s upcoming Fantastic Four, and an untitled Marvel movie. It’s been rumored that this unnamed movie would be the recently-announced X-Force, but there’s always the potential that could be a solo effort from one of the X-Men. What spin-off film do you want to see from the “X-Men” franchise?
The next entry in the franchise, X-Men: Days of Future Past, is scheduled to hit theaters on May 23.
