The film features an ensemble cast led by Dave Bautista (My Spy) alongside Omari Hardwick (Spell), Tig Notaro (Instant Family), Hiroyuki Sanada (Westworld), Raul Castillo (Vida), Nora Arnezeder (Zoo), Matthias Schweighöfer (The Manny), Ana de la Reguera (Goliath), Samantha Win (Wonder Woman), Rich Cetrone (Thor) and Garrett Dillahunt (Fear the Walking Dead).

Snyder has been developing the film for nearly 15 years, first setting it at Warner Bros., where he was primarily set up with the DCEU and adaptations of Watchmen and 300, amongst other films, and Universal Pictures, who produced his Dawn of the Dead remake penned by James Gunn (The Suicide Squad). The project found new life at Netflix in 2019, with the streaming platform greenlighting a reported $70-90 million budget and swiftly partnering with Snyder to build a franchise around the film, including a prequel feature helmed by Schweighöfer centered on his character, which wrapped filming in December, and an anime series also set prior to the events of the film.
Army of the Dead is set to hit select theaters and Netflix on May 21.
