Extraction Sequel A Go With Joe Russo Returning!

Just over a week after garnering the highest premiere numbers for a Netflix original film, the streaming service has greenlit a sequel to the Chris Hemsworth-led actioner Extraction with Joe Russo (Avengers: Endgame) returning to pen the script, according to Deadline.

The new film will be produced once again by Joe and Anthony Russo’s production banner AGBO, who are also currently working to bring back Sam Hargrave to helm the follow-up and Hemsworth reprise his role as mercenary Tyler Rake, though sources report that the streaming service won’t sign those deals until the script is complete.

The deal is closed for me to write Extraction 2, and we are in the formative stages of what the story can be,” Russo told Deadline. “We’re not committing yet to whether that story goes forward, or backward in time. We left a big loose ending that leaves question marks for the audience.

Despite the lack of new deals for Hargrave and Hemsworth, Russo notes that he expects Hargrave to return, though focus is being made to work out the story for the project and write the script before bringing it to the Avengers star. However, given Hemsworth’s social media love for the large audience over the weekend, and his previous work with the Russo Brothers, chances are solid he could return.

The Russos believe that the large audience numbers, estimated to be viewed in 90 million households over the past week and a half, comes from the filmmakers’ decision to remain authentic and shoot it in India, where they first visited during press tours on the Avengers films.

We were shocked we couldn’t think of a significant Western action film that had shot there, and the cultural elements just supercharged the storytelling,” Joe Russo said. “It was combustible and compelling to set it in an emerging market like that.

Extraction (formerly titled as Dhaka) takes place in an underworld of weapons dealers and traffickers and follows a young boy who becomes the pawn in a war between notorious drug lords. After being trapped by kidnappers inside one of the world’s most impenetrable cities, his rescue beckons the unparalleled skill of a mercenary named Tyler Rake. But Rake is a broken man with nothing to lose, harboring a death wish that makes an already deadly mission near impossible.

The cast includes Chris Hemsworth (Thor: Ragnarok), David Harbour (Stranger Things, Black Widow), Derek Luke (13 Reasons Why), Fay Masterson (Vice)Golshifteh Farahani (Paterson) and newcomer Rudhraksh Jaiswal. The film is being produced by Netflix. Joe Russo has written the script while Sam Hargrave, known for his stunt work in multiple MCU movies as well as small roles in action films such as Atomic Blonde, will be making his directorial debut with the film.

Extraction is produced by Avengers: Endgame directors Anthony and Joe Russo through their AGBO banner along with Hemsworth, Mike Larocca, and Eric Gitter.
