Criterion’s Grand Budapest Hotel Release Includes Animated Storyboards Narrated by Wes Anderson

IndieWire brings word that The Criterion Collection’s release of Wes Anderson’s Oscar-winning film The Grand Budapest Hotel includes 25 minutes of animated storyboards narrated by Anderson. The six animated sequences include “Introduction,” “Washer Woman,” “Killing of Kovacs,” “Prison Escape,” “Gabelmeister’s Peak,” and “Hotel Show-Down.”

A clip released exclusively by Polygon. reveals how the story is brought to life through Anderson’s hand-drawn graphics and offers an early look at how the filmmaker envisioned various shots and camera movements for the film.

In addition to the animated storyboards, the Criterion release includes a 2K digital transfer that was supervised by Anderson, who also provided new audio commentary for the movie alongside filmmaker Roman Coppola and actor Jeff Goldblum as well as more special features listed below:

-The Making of The Grand Budapest Hotel, a new documentary about the film

-New interviews with the cast and crew

-Video essays from 2015 and 2020 by critic Matt Zoller Seitz and film scholar David Bordwell

-Behind-the-scenes, special-effects, and test footage

-Trailer

-Two pieces by critic Richard Brody and (with the Blu-ray) a double-sided poster and other ephemera

Searchlight Pictures released The Grand Budapest Hotel in March 2014 which became Anderson’s highest-grossing movie worldwide after garnering $172.9 million at the box office. The movie starred Ralph Fiennes, Tilda Swinton, Bill Murray, Owen Wilson, Jeff Goldblum, Willem Dafoe, and then-newcomer Tony Revolori.

The Grand Budapest Hotel is available to own now on Criterion.
