Moviebill Bringing AR To Regal Moviegoers During Lockdown

As audiences around the world are stuck in quarantine, Moviebill and Regal are partnering to bring the magic of Augmented Reality to moviegoers with a mobile device entitled Moviebill Interactive 3D on the Regal App, beginning with the carnival-style game “Pop-a-Corn” that launched today!

“Movies have always offered an escape from reality,” James Andrew Felts, Moviebill Founder and CEO, said in a statement. “At times like this, we need them now more than ever. That’s why we decided if moviegoers can’t go to the theatre, we can at least bring a theatrical experience to them.”

Other planned AR experiences launching in April will give moviegoers the opportunity to play cinema-related games together, interact with detailed movie timelines and celebrate the joy of moviegoing even while practicing safe social distancing. “Pop-a-Corn” is playable in one or two-player modes, allowing users to place 3D popcorn buckets in AR space, as well as try their hands at tossing popcorn kernels and trying to land them inside the buckets. As gameplay continues, the rounds get trickier, moving the buckets and even shrinking them smaller and smaller with each successful toss.

“We are excited to partner with our friends at Moviebill to bring this interactive experience to our fans,” Ken Thewes, Regal CMO, said in a statement. “While nothing can compare to the thrill of the big-screen experience at Regal, we sincerely hope that games like these can help movie lovers pass the time away until our theatres reopen.”

Following the launch of “Pop-a-Corn,” Moviebill will roll out additional AR attractions on a weekly basis, including a series of interactive 3D labyrinths entitled “Movie Mazes” on April 14, “Regal Crown Toss” on April 21 and additional experiences currently in the works throughout the summer and will be officially announced at a later date.

“Millions of frequent moviegoers are anxiously awaiting the opportunity to leave home and get back to the movies,” Felts said. “Not only for the content, but also for the community, the experience, and the joy of the shared big-screen experience.”

This year, Regal has launched several AR experiences via its partnership with Moviebill, with highlights including poster takeover experiences for Frozen II and Onward, a 3D Terminator: Dark Fate experience that allowed users to come face to face with a full-scale Rev-9 Terminator and a Harley Quinn and the Birds of Prey poster game that let users use Harley’s signature mallet to smash different movie posters to reveal prizes and exclusive content.
