Frozen II continues to freeze out box office competition
Walt Disney Studios’ animated sequel Frozen II continued to dominate at the box office for the third straight weekend as it once again landed at #1 with $34.6 million for a domestic total of $337.5 million and a worldwide cume of $919.6 million. It looks likely to cross the $1billion mark by or before next weekend and surpass the original 2013 film’s $1.27 billion shortly after.
This was also a landmark weekend for Disney as (according to Deadline) it became the first studio to take in over $10 billion in a calendar year. It was aided by Frozen II as well as hits like Avengers: Endgame ($2.798B), The Lion King ($1.656B), Captain Marvel ($1.130B), Toy Story 4 ($1.074B), Aladdin ($1.051B), and they still have December 20’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker locked and loaded to rake in over $200 million domestically on its debut weekend.
Lionsgate’s Knives Out continued to rake it in as it held onto the #2 spot in its second week with $14.1 million domestically for a $63.4 million total and $124 million worldwide, making it ever more likely that Rian Johnson will make a sequel.
Making this weekend pretty much a repeat of last week, Ford v Ferrari stayed at #3 with $6.537 million ($91.1 million total), Queen & Slim at #4 with $6.53 million ($26.8 million total) and A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood at #5 with $5.2 million ($43 million total).
The Mark Ruffalo drama Dark Waters added nearly 2000 theaters to take #6 with $4.1 million for a $5.28 million total.
