In a rather peculiar move, Collider reports that Sony Pictures is developing another film for their own extended Marvel Universe with a Madame Web feature film from Morbius screenwriters Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless.

Web first appeared in the pages of The Amazing Spider-Man #210 back in 1980 from writer Denny O’Neil and artist John Romita Jr. A precognitive and (blind) psychic character, Madame Web has passed her title and powers on to others in the pages of Marvel Comics and even become a major player in the world of Spider-Man because of her ties to “The Great Web,” a multiversal construct that ties all “Spider” characters together across the multiverse and gives them their powers. It’s possible this film could be used to start bringing together all of the characters from across universes, but that remains to be seen (and would be very ambitious).
Following the “divorce” of Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios, and the success of Venom in 2018, the studio is eager to dig back into their coffers to develop projects around the many Marvel characters they own the feature film rights to. Next year the studio has Morbius and Venom 2 debuting in theaters, with other projects like Silk, Nightwatch, Black Cat, Silver Sable, and Kraven all in various stages of development.
