The film, adapted from Jonathan Larsen’s play of the same name, tells the story of aspiring theater composer Jon in 1990 New York as he waits tables while writing his own musical he hopes will give him his big break. As Jon approaches his 30th birthday, he is overcome with anxiety as his girlfriend is pressuring him to move on with his life as she no longer wishes to wait for his career aspirations to come to fruition while his best friend and roommate has also given up on his creative dreams for a high-paying advertising job and is going to move out.
The film will be produced by Imagine Entertainment, who have found success in the music genre in the past with the cult classic Cry-Baby and the James Brown biopic Get On Up, and written by Steven Levenson (“Dear Evan Hansen”).
Miranda, who starred in an Off-Broadway production of the play, is known for creating the acclaimed Broadway productions In the Heights, which recently received a film adaptation order set for a summer 2020 release, and the Tony award winning Hamilton, which has set numerous records since its debut in 2015.
“Jonathan Larson’s captivating storytelling in Rent first taught me that musicals could be contemporary, true to life, and depict your own experiences. But it was Tick, Tick…Boom! that solidified that drive in me to hone my own voice as a playwright,” Miranda previously said in a statement.

Miranda revived Hamilton in January in Puerto Rico and was last seen in Disney sequel Mary Poppins Returns, which set the record for the longest gap between live-action sequels at 54 years and was a modest critical and commercial success, garnering four Oscar nominations and almost $350 million at the global box office. He can next be seen in the upcoming BBC/HBO series adaptation of the fantasy novel series His Dark Materials, which is set to premiere later this year, and the film adaptation of In the Heights, which is currently filming and is slated to hit theaters June 26, 2020.
