Lionsgate Nabs Hunger Games Prequel for the Big Screen

This morning, The Hunger Games creator Suzanne Collins announced that a prequel to her hit YA book series is in the works and will arrive on May 19, 2020. In addition, Lionsgate (having previously adapted the three Hunger Games books into four movies), will be the home for the prequel on the big screen as well (according to THR).

“As the proud home of the Hunger Games movies, we can hardly wait for Suzanne’s next book to be published. We’ve been communicating with her during the writing process and we look forward to continuing to work closely with her on the movie,” said Joe Drake, chairman of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group.

The untitled novel will be set 64 years before the events of the trilogy, focusing on the failed rebellion attempt in the country of Panem.

“With this book, I wanted to explore the state of nature, who we are and what we perceive is required for our survival,” Collins said. “The reconstruction period 10 years after the war, commonly referred to as the Dark Days — as the country of Panem struggles back to its feet — provides fertile ground for characters to grapple with these questions and thereby define their views of humanity.”

The original Hunger Games movies launched Jennifer Lawrence into superstardom after the first film arrived in 2012. All told, the four movies in the series grossed $2.968 billion worldwide. Get the whole series on Blu-Ray.
