The upcoming Bond 25 has been mired with stories about its troubled production, but now some details about what the film might actually be about have started to surface. The Daily Mail‘s Baz Bamigboye (frequently right about Bond related scoops) reports that the film’s plot will center around genetic engineering.
“The movie’s premise is genetic warfare, which is fascinating — but you gotta boil it down and make it accessible,” the source said. It was this need for accessibility (and humor) that got Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag, Killing Eve) involved with the script. “That’s why Phoebe was hired. She has somehow made sense of it.”
Waller-Bridge is currently punching up the script with director Cary Joji Fukunaga while star Daniel Craig is recovering from an ankle injury he got while filming. The source also says that Oscar-winner Rami Malek, who will play the villain, is currently researching his role with some real-life genetic experts.

That ankle injury was just another incident with Bond 25, which has seen its fair share of setbacks over the past year. It was initially to be directed by Danny Boyle, who exited the project abruptly this summer over creative differences. This delayed production while the studio was forced to search for new directors, before eventually landing on Fukunaga, best known for directing the first season of HBO’s True Detective.
EON Productions and Metro Goldwyn Mayer Studios recently reached an agreement with Universal Pictures to partner on the worldwide release of the 25th James Bond film. The superspy’s previous outing, Spectre, opened in U.S. theaters on November 16, 2015. The film earned $200 million domestically and $680.6 million internationally, for a worldwide total of $880.7 million.
The still-untitled Bond 25 is due in theaters April 8, 2020.
