For a long time, one of Marvel Comics’ most successful comic book series were the various “X-Men” titles, which in 2000 were turned by 20th Century Fox into an equally successful series of movies. One of the breakout stars from the series was one Hugh Jackman, who did such a good job bringing the Canadian berserker Wolverine to life, that the character was eventually spun off into two of his own movies, including the upcoming The Wolverine.
Last week, ComingSoon.net/SuperHeroHype sat down with Jackman to talk about the latest X-Movie, which made for an easy transition to talk about next year’s X-Men: Days of Future Past, which reunites Jackman with much of the cast of the original “X-Men” movies as well as original director Bryan Singer.
“It has been phenomenal. He’s just loving it,” Jackman told us about Singer bringing the old gang back together. “I think all of the actors who were in it before just love being back together and everyone is excited about it. It’s a really great story, great concept, and in my position as Wolverine, I get to act with them all. I mean it’s truly one of the great ensembles I think ever put together, so I’m really having a great time.”
With a subtitle like “Days of Future Past,” fans of the comics will have certain expectations based on the classic two-part story by Chris Claremont and John Byrne that appeared in The Uncanny X-Men #141 and 142 over thirty years ago, but Jackman told us that, like The Wolverine, the story will diverge from the original comics. “Fair to say there are a few differences and fans like that,” he told us. “I don’t think fans necessarily want the comic book lifted onto film. You need to keep them guessing and keep them excited too and also make it work in a filmic language, not just the comic book language.”
Jackman also used the opportunity to reveal why people won’t want to run straight to the bathroom once the credits roll at the end of The Wolverine.
“If you stay on after the credits you get to see a nice little preview for Bryan’s next film,” Jackman teased.
