Gerard Butler Thriller Greenland Lands STX Films for Domestic Distribution

Greenland, the upcoming thriller from director Ric Roman Waugh (Shot Caller, Snitch), has partnered with STX Films for domestic distribution. The Hollywood Reporter has learned that STXInternational’s John Friedberg had acquired the international distribution rights, and will handle the UK distribution directly. It’s shopping the international rights at the European Film Market to Thunder Road Films and Anton.

The star of Greenland, Gerard Butler, had previously worked with Waugh on Angel Has Fallen. They re-teamed for Greenland, a film about one family’s fight for survival in the face of a cataclysmic natural disaster. Production is set to start sometime in May. The script comes from Chris Sparling (Buried, The Sea of Trees), with revisions by Mitchell LaFortune.

The film is being produced by Thunder Road Films’ Basil Iwanyk (Sicario, John Wick), who also had a hand in development, alongside Butler and Alan Siegel via their G-BASE production company. Anton is both producing and fully financing the picture, while CAA Media Finance arranged its financing, as well as represented the project’s domestic rights alongside Anton.

Butler recently appeared in the sociopolitical submarine action movie Hunter Killer, and the drama/thriller The Vanishing, which was released in January.
