With Captain Marvel raking in all the money at the box office, the creators of the film can let loose some behind-the-scenes spoilers for fans to debate about, including the original Captain Marvel ending to Carol’s story. BEWARE SPOILERS!
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight (via Collider), Captain Marvel editor Debbie Berman dropped a few nuggets of information regarding a planned ending that would have seen Carol fly off into the sunset alone. However, she felt the ending just didn’t work and pushed for some changes.
“I did actually suggest some tweaks to the ending of this film,” Berman said. “It used to end with Carol flying off into space alone, and I found that a bit jarring. Like, where exactly was she going? And what was she doing? It felt like we needed a stronger visual to assert a more specific justification for her leaving and disappearing for so many years.”
The “tweaks” added Carol flying off into space with Talos (played by Ben Mendelsohn) and his family; a moment the editor feels provided the character a greater “sense of purpose” and “made it easier to believe that she left her newfound life on Earth because she was with a friend we knew she cared about, and for a more specific mission. It gave more resonance and closure to her final moment in the film.”

Captain Marvel follows Carol Danvers (Larson) as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races. Set more than a decade prior to the events in 2008’s Iron Man, Captain Marvel is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The film also stars Lashana Lynch, Gemma Chan, Algenis Perez Soto, Rune Temte, McKenna Grace, with Annette Bening, and Jude Law. Reprising their roles from Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy are Djimon Hounsou and Lee Pace, and returning once again to a Marvel Studios film will be Gregg as Agent Phil Coulson.
Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel is directed by the writing/directing team of Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, whose credits include Mississippi Grind and Half Nelson. An all-star collective of accomplished writers penned the screenplay, including Meg LeFauve (Inside Out), Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy), Geneva Robertson-Dworet (Tomb Raider), Liz Flahive & Carly Mensch (GLOW) and Anna Boden & Ryan Fleck.
