The book focuses on a young seventh grader named Suzy, who loses her best friend via a drowning accident. When Suzy becomes convinced her friend died because of a rare jellyfish thing she sets out on a globe-trotting quest to prove her theory correct. According to the trade, the book explores “the ideas of life and death, the frailty of friendships and the potential of hope right next door.”
Gigi Pritzker and Rachel Shane of MWM Studios, Bruna Papandrea, and Reese Witherspoon will produce for Universal. Kahiu has directed a number of short films along with the 2018 drama Rafiki.
Brown is practically a household name thanks to her breakout role in Netflix’s hit Stranger Things series and a prominent role in this summer’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters and 2020’s Godzilla vs. Kong.
