Jon Hamm Boards Despicable Me Spinoff Minions

Jon Hamm has signed on to provide a voice in Illumination Entertainment’s Minions, which Universal Pictures will release on Friday, December 19, 2014.

In the spin-off of the successful Despicable Me franchise, Hamm will voice Herb Overkill, husband to super-villainess Scarlet Overkill (voiced by Sandra Bullock). The film follows the unpredictably hilarious Minions, who rocketed to worldwide popularity in 2010’s Despicable Me, and who will next be seen in this summer’s Despicable Me 2.

In Minions, we discover that Minions have actually existed throughout history, always seeking out the most despicable master to serve. At a time before they met their current boss Gru, the Minions encountered Scarlet Overkill, a stylish and bad-ass super-villain bent on world domination.

Hamm, best known for his continuing role as Don Draper on AMC’s “Mad Men,” last appeared on the big screen in Friends with Kids. He’s also slated to lead the upcoming Craig Gillespie sports drama Million Dollar Arm.

Minions will be produced by Illumination’s Chris Meledandri and Janet Healy, and it will be directed by Pierre Coffin and Kyle Balda. Brian Lynch has written the screenplay for the film, and Chris Renaud serves as executive producer.
