Netflix has announced that they will be exclusively launching an adaptation of playwright Christopher Demos-Brown’s 2018 Broadway hit American Son. Golden Globe nominee Kerry Washington (Scandal, Confirmation) will reprise her role from the play in the adaptation, and Tony Award winner Kenny Leon (A Raisin in the Sun, Fences) is returning to direct and produce.

American Son centers on interracial parents (Kerry Washington, Steven Pasquale) who reunite in a Florida police station to search for answers about their missing teenage son. Steven Pasquale (Rescue Me, Divorce), Jeremy Jordan (Supergirl, Newsies), and Eugene Lee (Gem of the Ocean, Thunder Road) will also reprise their roles in the Netflix production.
“American Son powerfully explores themes of family, love and identity,” said Cindy Holland, Vice President of Original Content. “We are honored to work with Kerry Washington, Kenny Leon, Christopher Demos-Brown and the entire cast to bring this story from the Broadway stage to our members around the world.”
The play will wrap its run on Broadway on January 27. American Son, which marked the Broadway debut of playwright Demos-Brown, is a gripping tale about who we are as a nation, and how we deal with family relationships, love, loss, and identity.
