Wonder Woman Characters Guide

Meet the key Wonder Woman characters from the upcoming feature film

Wonder Woman will hit theaters on June 2, the first time the DC Comics character has lead a live-action film. In preparation for the big event, we’ve got a guide to the key Wonder Woman characters for you. Check out all the info on Steve Trevor, Etta Candy, Doctor Poison and more!

Before she was Wonder Woman, she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, trained to be an unconquerable warrior. Raised on a sheltered island paradise, when an American pilot crashes on their shores and tells of a massive conflict raging in the outside world, Diana leaves her home, convinced she can stop the threat. Fighting alongside man in a war to end all wars, Diana will discover her full powers… and her true destiny.

Wonder Woman

Diana, a.k.a. Wonder Woman, is played by Gal Gadot (Fast & Furious 6Keeping Up with the Joneses). Diana is raised on the all-female Amazon island of Themyscira, and is the daughter of Queen Hippolyta. She is a warrior who fights for good and is considered one of the top three superheroes of DC Comics, alongside Batman and Superman. She was first introduced in the comics in All Star Comics #8 in December 1941 and didn’t make her first appearance in a live-action film until Gadot was seen in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016. Diana decides to journey to “Man’s World” after Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) crashes on Themyscira and tells her about the war he’s fighting in (WWI). Diana has been trained to fight by her Aunt Antiope (Robin Wright). She is a founding member of the Justice League and a demigoddess. After Wonder Woman, she’ll be seen next in Justice League.

Steve Trevor

Steve Trevor is played by Chris Pine (Star TrekHell or High Water). He’s a captain in the United States Army Air Service in WWI and is the love interest of Diana. He crash lands on Diana’s home island of Themyscira, and is the catalyst for Diana choosing to fight in “Man’s World.” He first appeared in the comics in All Star Comics #8 (December 1941) and is the first man Diana has ever seen. We saw a glimpse of him in a photo in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice with his WWI comrades-in-arms.

Queen Hippolyta

Queen Hippolyta is played by Connie Nielsen (GladiatorThe Good Wife) and is the mother of Diana. She’s also the Amazon Queen of Themyscira, where Diana is born. She first appeared in All Star Comics #8 (December, 1941). She raised Diana alongside her sister General Antiope (Robin Wright), training her in battle.

Etta Candy

Etta Candy is played by Shaun of the Dead actress Lucy Davis. Etta is secretary to Steve Trevor and as we can see from the trailers, is a friend to Diana and the comic relief of the film. In the comics, where she was introduced in Sensation Comics #2 in 1942, Etta was part of the Holliday Girls, a group of women who went on adventures with Diana. Etta was always ready for a fight and accompanied Wonder Woman often, fighting right alongside her.

Maru/Doctor Poison

Doctor Poison is played by Spanish actress Elena Anaya (The Skin I Live InVan Helsing). We know she’s gifted in poisons (obviously) and chemistry and she’ll be one of the villains. Doctor Poison, a.k.a. Princess Maru was introduced in the comics in 1942 in Sensation Comics #2 and worked for the Nazis.

Antiope

Robin Wright (House of CardsThe Princess Bride) plays the Amazon Antiope, Diana’s aunt who trains her in combat. You can see her in the picture above on the far right. Her sister is Hippolyta (Connie Nielsen), Diana’s mother.

Sir Patrick Morgan

Harry Potter‘s David Thewlis plays peace negotiator Sir Patrick Morgan. Thewlis is also known for The Theory of Everything and Anomalisa.

General Erich Ludendorff

Danny Huston (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) will play General Erich Ludendorff, a General in the German army in WWI, where the film is set. We’ve seen him in the trailers at a ball, where Wonder Woman walks in with a sword concealed in her dress. Huston is also known for Children of Men and The Aviator.

Sameer

Sameer, a secret agent and master of disguise is played by American Hustle‘s Saïd Taghmaoui. He is an ally of Steve Trevor’s. We don’t know much about Sameer, but Taghmaou told the French magazine Ultra (via ComicBookMovie), “I’ll be playing a superhero, but details are still under wraps, so I can’t tell you much.” As this is likely translated, we really don’t have confirmation of anything. Anyone care to speculate? That’s Taghmaou on the left in this set photo.

Charlie

Charlie is played by Transpotting actor Ewen Bremner. He’s a buddy of Steve Trevor’s and after a tour of duty, has developed post-traumatic stress disorder, which they called being shellshocked back in WWI. He’s been described as a heavy-drinking sharpshooter. Bremmer is also known for his roles in SnatchBlack Hawk Down and Pearl Harbor. You can see him in the above image on the far right.

Wonder Woman stars Gal Gadot (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice), Chris Pine (Star Trek), Robin Wright (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Netflix‘s House of Cards), Danny Huston (Clash of the Titans, X-Men Origins: Wolverine), Ewen Bremner (Exodus: Gods and Kings, Snowpiercer), Saïd Taghmaoui (American Hustle), Elena Anaya (The Skin I Live In), Connie Nielsen (GladiatorNymphomaniac: Vol. I) and Lucy Davis (Shaun of the Dead).

The film is being produced by Charles Roven, Zack Snyder and Deborah Snyder, with Richard Suckle, Stephen Jones, Wesley Coller, Geoff Johns and Rebecca Roven serving as executive producers.

Wonder Woman opens in theaters on June 2, 2017. It will be the fourth film in the newly-launched DC Cinematic Universe, following 2013’s Man of Steel and last year’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad. It will be followed in 2017 on November 17 with the highly-anticipated Justice League movie.
