The 10 Best Keanu Reeves Movies
-
#10. The Neon Demon (2016)
Reeves took on a fun supporting role as a sleazy skid row hotel manager in Nicolas Winding Refn's divisive fashion industry horror flick. It proved that the actor could play as nasty a guy as you could imagine.
-
#9. Point Break (1991)
Playing an FBI agent who learns how to surf from a master criminal played by Patrick Swayze gave Reeves credibility as a serious action lead. The film was poorly remade in 2015.
-
#8. Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992)
In Francis Coppola's take on the classic gothic horror tale, Reeves played the unfortunate businessman Jonathan Harker, who is taken captive by Gary Oldman's decrepit Count Dracula. This is actually one of Reeves' less-respected performances, but the movie as a whole is a formidable visual feast.
-
#7. My Own Private Idaho (1991)
Gus Van Sant's lyrical, Shakespearian tale of male street hustlers searching for meaning won accolades for Reeves and proved something of a turning point away from the surfer dude stereotype. It also provided him a chance to work with the late River Phoenix in the tragic actor's most admired role.
-
#6. Much Ado About Nothing (1993)
Thanks to director/star Kenneth Branagh and a robust cast including Denzel Washington, Michael Keaton and Emma Thompson, Reeves proved he could play dashing in a Shakespeare comedy.
-
#5. The Matrix (1999)
The Wachowski's future noir action masterpiece solidified Reeves' status as a major movie star. Unfortunately, his return as Neo in the two lackluster sequels somewhat sullied the legacy of the original film, even though he personally gave the role his all. Sometimes you can't un-suckify a bad sequel.
-
#4. Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989)
This is the role that truly put Reeves on the map. Along with best bud Alex Winter, he played a California airhead to satiric perfection, and most rightiously traveled through time to bag some of the most important historical figures of all-time. A classic sci-fi comedy.
-
#3. Speed (1994)
"What do you do?" Well, you give Reeves a gun, Sandra Bullock, and a mad man played by Dennis Hopper who's rigged a bus to explode if it drops below 50 miles per hour. A surprise action hit in the summer of 1994.
-
#2. John Wick (2014)
After several years under the radar, Reeves returned to action genre with a vengeance with this glorious old school revenge movie. Reeves plays the title hitman, who goes after an entire crime syndicate after the boss's son kills his dog.
-
#1. A Scanner Darkly (2006)
Philip K. Dick's mind-bending narrative of drug addicts living in the near future was given an animated take by director Richard Linklater. Reeves' performance as an undercover cop losing his grip on reality is sensitive and intricate, revealing a side of him we rarely get to see.
