Get ready for Inferno and Rogue One with our Felicity Jones movies and television spotlight
Not only does Felicity Jones star opposite Tom Hanks in this week’s Inferno, she’s set to play Jyn Erso in the upcoming film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, giving us another female lead in the franchise. The film takes place before A New Hope and will tell the story of the Rebels who risked their lives to get the plans to the Death Star. You know, the ones that Princess gives to R2-D2, setting off the epic story that has spanned decades? Jones was also recently nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for her work in The Theory of Everything.

Felicity Jones Movies and TV Spotlight: The Worst Witch (1998-1999)
Before Harry Potter, there was The Worst Witch, a British TV series about two young witches at a school for magic. Jones starred as Ethel Hallow alongside Georgina Sherrington as Mildred Hubble. (The role was played by Anna Kipling in the American TV movie). The show was based on the series of the same name by Jill Murphy. Jones was replaced by Katy Allen after the first season and Ethel’s appearance change was explained by a “witch over.” She returned for the sequel Weirdsister College from 2001-2002.
Felicity Jones Movies and TV Spotlight: Northanger Abbey (2007)
In the British TV version of the Jane Austen novel, Jones plays Catherine Morland, a teenager who loves Gothic romance novels. After a trip to Bath with friends, she is invited to stay at Northanger Abbey and comes up with a terrible theory about a woman’s demise. As with most Austen novels, there is romance, broken proposals and spurned lovers. The broadcast was very well-received.
Felicity Jones Movies and TV Spotlight: Brideshead Revisited (2008)
This film is based on the 1945 Evelyn Waugh novel and was seen earlier as a TV series. It’s the story of a young man named Charles (Matthew Goode) who befriends a rich man named Sebastian (Ben Whishaw) and falls in love with his sister Julia (Hayley Atwell). The course of true love never did run smooth and religion, alcoholism and money get in the way of everyone’s happiness. Jones plays Julia’s younger sister Cordelia (she’s the one with the braids in the picture).
Felicity Jones Movies and TV Spotlight: Doctor Who (2008)
In the Doctor Who episode “The Unicorn and the Wasp,” the Tenth Doctor (David Tennant) and Donna Noble (Catherine Tate) travel to England in 1926. Jones plays Robina Redmond, one of the murder suspects during a dinner party who’s guest of honor is none other than Agatha Christie (Fenella Woolgar).
Felicity Jones Movies and TV Spotlight: The Diary of Anne Frank (2009)
In this version of the famous diary kept by teenaged Holocaust victim Anne Frank (Tamsin Greig), Jones plays her sister Margot Frank. The BBC series ran for five episodes in the UK and was cut from 150 minutes to 100 minutes for the American broadcast. Anne, Margot and their family, as well as another family hid for years in an attic from Nazi forces, though were eventually found. All of the inhabitants other than Anne and Margot’s father Otto (Ian Glen) were put to death in concentration camps. Otto later released Anne’s diary as a book that generations of children have since read.
Felicity Jones Movies and TV Spotlight: Chéri (2009)
This film stars Michelle Pfeiffer as a courtesean named Léa who is in love with a much younger man who’s nickname is Chéri (Rupert Friend). Their doomed affair is brought abruptly to a halt when Chéri is forced to marry the much younger Edmée (Jones). Try as they might, nothing can keep star-crossed lovers apart, though things don’t go well for them. They most certainly don’t go well for the young Edmée who cannot compete with Léa.
Felicity Jones Movies and TV Spotlight: The Tempest (2010)
This Julie Taymor version of Shakespeare’s play did a bit of gender-bending with Helen Mirren starring as the sorceress Prospera (the sorcerer is named Prospero in the play). Prospera lives alone on an island with her daughter Miranda (Jones), an innocent who has never met a man. When a ship lands on the island after Prospera causes a tempest in revenge for her exile, she falls in love with Ferdinand (Reeve Carney). The film also starred Djimon Hounsou as Caliban, the creature Prospera keeps as a slave, Ben Whishaw as the spirit Ariel and Russell Brand as the jester Trinculo.
Felicity Jones Movies and TV Spotlight: Like Crazy (2011)
This film also stars the late Anton Yelchin and Jennifer Lawrence, and is the story of a British student attending college in the United States. She falls in love with Jacob, but stays past her visa expiration and is denied entry back into the U.S after leaving. They try desperately to keep their love alive, but neither one of them can regain their innocent affection after circumstances keep them apart for so long.
Felicity Jones Movies and TV Spotlight: The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014)
In this film, Jones plays Felicia Hardy, who comic book fans know as Black Cat (though it didn’t happen in the film and her surname was only revealed in a marketing video). She’s Norman Osborn’s (Chris Cooper) assistant. The franchise has since ended and is being rebooted through a partnership between Marvel and Sony.
Felicity Jones Movies and TV Spotlight: The Theory of Everything (2014)
This film is the story of theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking and is based on the memoir “Travelling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen” by his ex-wife Jane Wilde Hawking. Jones plays Jane, from the time the two meet in college, through Stephen’s diagnosis of motor neuron disease and their marriage and ultimate divorce. Jones starred opposite Eddie Redmayne and the film received a slew of award nominations. Jones was nominated for Best Actress and Redmayne for Best Actor, which he won.
