“Bring Him Home,” is a tagline doubly appropriate as January 12 sees The Martian come home on DVD and Blu-ray. Joining the marooned astronaut in home entertainment is the return of Adam Sandler’s Dracula in the animated adventure Hotel Transylvania 2 and Woody Allen’s latest, Irrational Man, starring Joaquin Phoenix.
Two recent big-screen horror franchise sequels arrive January 12 in the form of Sinister 2 and Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension. When it comes to horror, there’s also the werewolf thriller Howl and the sequel to the 2013 indie contagion horror, Contracted Phase 2.
Fox Home Entertainment this week re-releases The Devil Wears Prada as a 10th anniversary edition, while RLJ Entertainment delivers a 25th anniversary Blu-ray of Tom Stoppard’s Shakespeare comedy, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. Meanwhile, The Criterion Collection inducts both Wim Wenders’ The American Friend and Giuseppe De Santis’ Bitter Rice.
Fans of comic books in the early ’90s may be interested in January 12th’s DVD-only release of the documentary, The Image Revolution. It examines the birth of Image Comics and what the company meant for creator-driven sequential art stories.
Small screen releases hitting January 12 include the first season of the acclaimed USA Network series Mr. Robot and the BBC‘s New Year’s day special, Sherlock: The Abominable Bride.
Debuting via Digital HD the week of January 12 is the Johnny Depp-led Whitey Bulger biopic Black Mass, the Bradley Cooper comedy drama Burnt, the family friendly monsters run amuck tale Goosebumps and the Vin Diesel fantasy actioner The Last Witch Hunter.
