Spider-Man: No Way Home officially hits theaters tomorrow and it will continue many storylines in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While Peter Parker’s multiverse antics will be at the forefront, Marisa Tomei will once again portray Aunt May. ComingSoon’s Jonathan Sim spoke with the actress about her role, Aunt May’s relationship with Happy Hogan, and more.
Jonathan Sim: Your character of Aunt May is put into a completely new situation in this film. How has your portrayal of the character evolved since you signed on for the role years ago?
Marisa Tomei: I’d like her to have evolved more, but she has grown up alongside him and they are a team. She’s had to understand the world is completely different [and] to understand that who he is and how he relates to the world. These powers that he has [have] opened her mind.
Aunt May obviously plays a vital role in Peter Parker’s life and they have this very natural dynamic. So I wanted to ask, what has it been like to build that chemistry with Tom Holland over the years and sell that relationship on camera?
Well, it wasn’t something we ever had to sell. It was very easy. When they put us together, it was a natural fit and I think that’s why we both continued on. He’s just super easy to get along with, and we came to the characters. We both didn’t know about the Marvel universe before we got there. We were learning together. So that also kind of translated into the actual trajectory of the story.
Now that this is, is your fifth movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. How would you say that taking on the role of Aunt May has impacted your life and your career?
It’s so nice to have so many fans from different walks of life, globally, all kinds of people who are so excited about this one in particular crashing ticket sites. It’s been a thrill to be part of something that’s this big.
Do you think that Aunt May and Happy Hogan will ever end up in a long-term relationship?
No.
No, you’re sure? You’re absolutely sure?

You just know that you’d never do that with him
[laughs] Do what with him? Maybe she does that with him, but I don’t know she does that with him.
Maybe we will get to see a little bit more of that in the movie.
I think the door’s open. Let’s put it that way. She’s not closing any doors.
