Netflix Comedy Don’t Look Up Set to Bring Laughter to Global Disaster

(In partnership with Netflix)

A who’s who of Hollywood icons is set to bring laughter to global disaster this December when Netflix’s disaster satire Don’t Look Up hits cinemas. If the trailer is anything to judge it by, this has every chance to be one of the biggest hits of this blockbuster season, so to catch you up on all of the hype, we’ve written this handy guide to everything we know about the film that looks set to bring laughter to our seemingly inevitable global disaster.

Who’s In It?

Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep, Rob Morgan, Jonah Hill, Cate Blanchett, and Tyler Perry, Don’t Look Up has a star-studded main cast, with supporting appearances from the likes of Ariana Grande, Kid Cudi, Timothée Chalamet, Chris Evans, Matthew Perry, and Ron Perlman.

What’s It About?

“Kate Dibiasky (Jennifer Lawrence), an astronomy grad student, and her professor Dr. Randall Mindy (Leonardo DiCaprio) make an astounding discovery of a comet orbiting within the solar system,” says the official synopsis. “The problem — it’s on a direct collision course with Earth. The other problem? No one really seems to care. Turns out warning mankind about a planet-killer the size of Mount Everest is an inconvenient fact to navigate.

“With the help of Dr. Oglethorpe (Rob Morgan), Kate and Randall embark on a media tour that takes them from the office of an indifferent President Orlean (Meryl Streep) and her sycophantic son and Chief of Staff, Jason (Jonah Hill), to the airwaves of The Daily Rip, an upbeat morning show hosted by Brie (Cate Blanchett) and Jack (Tyler Perry). With only six months until the comet makes impact, managing the 24-hour news cycle and gaining the attention of the social media obsessed public before it’s too late proves shockingly comical — what will it take to get the world to just look up?”

Who Made It?

Directed by Adam McKay (Anchorman, Talledega Nights, The Other Guys, Ant-Man) who also wrote the film Don’t Look Up was produced by McKay and Kevin Messick (Vice, Succession), with additional help on the story coming from renowned journalist and editor David Sirota, meaning that it has the comedy, film, and subject matter knowledge to make appropriate light of such a dire situation.

Is this the movie with that new Ariana Grande and Kid Cudi song in it?

It absolutely is. The prodigiously talented duo have teamed up to contribute  “Just Look Up” to the original soundtrack for the upcoming Netflix movie.  We’ve got a feeling it’ll be as big, if not bigger than Puff Daddy and Jimmy Page’s Godzilla OST monster hit “Come With Me.”

What are people saying so far?

The world premiere for Don’t Look Up took place overnight and while no official reviews have been posted, the initial feedback on social media from attendees is very positive.

Additionally, comments from the proudly pregnant Jennifer Lawrence from the premiere’s panel have drawn much attention after the Academy Award winner revealed she lost a tooth and swallowed her nose ring during filming. The fact that Lawrence soldiered on, minus the tooth tells us that this is a film that she and her castmates were invested in and therefore we should be extremely excited about seeing it.

When and how can we see it?

Don’t Look Up opens in select cinemas around Australia from December 9 and worldwide on December 10. It is set to stream on Netflix on December 24.
