A film that is equal parts harrowing drama and road trip comedy, Stephen Frears’ based-on-fact Philomena hits theaters in a limited release this Friday with plans to expand on November 27.
Steve Coogan, who also co-wrote alongside Jeff Pope, plays Martin Sixsmith, the real-life author of the book on which the film is based, “The Lost Child of Philomena Lee.” An investigate reporter for the BBC, Sixsmith’s latest story puts him in touch with Philomena Lee (Judi Dench), a woman who, in her youth, conceived a child out of wedlock. Because of her harsh Irish-Catholic upbringing, the child was given away and now, decades later, she and Sixsmith travel to America in hopes of finding out what happened to her long-lost boy.
