Interview: Julie Delpy, Ethan Hawke and Richard Linklater on Before Midnight

In 1995, Richard Linklater’s Before Sunrise brought together Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke as Celine and Jesse, two young lovers who, after meeting on a train bound for Vienna, spend the day in deep conversation, wandering together as the hours tick away before Jesse has to return to America.

In 2004, Before Sunset saw Delpy and Hawke return to their iconic roles, reuniting Celine and Jesse in a bookshop in Paris and asking what both souls would do for a shot at true love and a second chance at the one who got away.

Now, Before Midnight continues the series, catching up with the pair another nine years later in Greece where the realities of love are tested and measured against the weight of time itself.

ComingSoon.net sat down with Delpy, Hawke and Linklater to talk about the years of preparation that go into each chapter, the incredible dedication required to make the series’ long takes feel effortless and the role of cinema as a time machine.
