Chief Detective 1958 aired episodes 5 and 6 on Friday and Saturday on MBC and Disney Plus. Starring Lee Je-Hoon as Park Young-Han, the cop-crime K-drama focuses on four detectives going above and beyond to fight against corruption.
In the previous episode, Young Han and his team, including Kim Sang-Soon (Lee Dong-Hwi), Cho Kyung-Hwan (Choi Woo-Sung), and Seo Ho-Jeong (Yoon Hyun-Soo), solved an infanticide case. It further showed Young-Han’s friend Sung Chil’s fight against the men of gangster Viper. The episode also included Young Han and Lee Hae-Joo’s (Seo Eun-Soo) first kiss.
Episode 5 begins with the four detectives learning about Sung Chil’s death. They are determined to catch the culprit, but the villagers do not come forward to help because of fear. Despite many obstacles, Young-Han eventually catches the killer.

In Chief Detective 1958 episode 5, Grandma Oh mourns her grandson’s death but feels a bit relieved when Young Han promises to catch the killer. He knows Viper and his gang members have killed him.
At first, Young Han and his team barge into Viper’s den and beat his people up. They drag Viper to the police station, but Chief Superintendent Choi orders him to be released. For context, the gangster is Chairman Lee’s right hand. Due to corrupted officials, Sung Chil’s killer walks free.
Young-Han doesn’t lose hope and begins to search for the murder weapon. Thanks to Unit 1 Chief Yoo, his team learns that the murder weapon belongs to Viper, as it was once gifted to humbly Chairman Lee. Their investigation brings them to a cult leader, who helps Young Han manipulate one of Viper’s members to find the evidence. Finally, Young Han has the murder weapon and is set to arrest Viper, but Chairman Lee strikes back. The latter sends an order that no one from South Korea can arrest anyone from Viper’s gang.
Young Han feels helpless and seeks Hae-Joo’s comfort. She encourages her to continue to fight the battle. Young Han gets an idea and lets Viper attack a US military soldier. Now, the US police arrested him. Meanwhile, Young Han makes a deal with Chairman Lee, who throws Viper under the bus. Hence, Sung Chil’s killer finally receives the punishment by law.
Towards the end, Young Han proposes to Hae-Joo, and the two get married. It further focuses on South Korea’s April Revolution in 1960, which majorly affected the government. As time changes, the episode shows more female recruits in the police force. The final scene features an attack on Unit 1, Chief Yoo.

Chief Detective 1958 episode 6 begins with elderly Park Young Han (Choi Bool-Am) sharing his wisdom with his cop grandson (played by Lee Je-Hoon). Travelling back to the past, Detective Young Han is now married and leading his team in a transformed South Korea.
His happiness doesn’t last long when he hears about the attack on Chief Yoo. He, Sang-Soon, Kyung-Hwan, and Ho-Jeong start their investigation. They initially suspect Viper, but he is in jail. Also, one of his men explains that gangsters do not stab the way Chief Yoo has been attacked. The attack seems to be done by a military-trained person.
Further, Young Han learns that Chief Yoo has irked the Sinkwang Society. Things get more evident when Deputy Director of National Police Choi appoints Baek Do-Seok as Senior Superintendent. Young Han is shocked to see Do-Seok, who used to be his instructor when Young Han was a young soldier. Do-Seok had almost forced Young Han to kill a pregnant woman, and that scene still haunts Young Han at night.
Towards the episode’s end, the old colleagues meet, and Young Han mentions his dark past. Now, Young Han gets the clear picture and learns that Deputy Director Choi sent the order to attack Chief Yoo. The detective barges into Choi’s office and forcefully arrests him. But, in return, he gets arrested and comes to the police station. The episode ends with Chief Yoo entering the police station and Young Han sighing in relief.
