Park Bo-Gum, Song Hye-Kyo K-Drama Encounter: Does Netflix Korean Drama Have a Happy or Sad Ending?

The K-drama Encounter is a 2019 romance series that recently premiered on Netflix. Starring Park Bo-Gum and Song Hye-Kyo, the South Korean drama had a magical start and ended on a happy note.

The story follows Cha Su-Hyeon, the daughter of a politician and the CEO of a hotel. Her life has always been run by others. In the past, her mother arranged her marriage to the son of a stubborn businesswoman. Even after their divorce, Su-Hyeon has to attend her in-laws’ events to maintain a cordial status in public. She is a celebrity for the media and hence, has rarely tasted freedom.

Things change when Su-Hyeon has a brief encounter with Kim Jin-Hyeok during a business trip in Cuba. They spend an unforgettable day, leaving an impression on each other’s hearts. The drama shows how fate brings two people together.

Encounter Episode 16 spoiler: Park Bo-Gum refuses to break up with Song Hye-Kyo

Encounter episodes were well-written and beautifully filmed. In episode 15, Song Hye-Kyo’s Su-Hyeon breaks up with Jin-Hyeok (Park Bo-Gum). She believes she did the right thing to protect him and his family from all the negative media attention.

Meanwhile, Su-Hyeon’s father takes a big step to free his daughter. He exposes all the wrongdoings of him and the Taegyeong Groups. Due to this, Su-Hyeon’s family makes headlines, which affects people around her. Plus, a news report reveals Jin-Hyeok’s face while the couple were on a date.

Encounter episode 16 begins with Jin-Hyeok barging into Su-Hyeon’s office and refusing to break up with her. He says, “I understand why you want to break up.” He adds, “I can’t break up with you. You can take the path you want. But don’t expect the same from me.” Park Bo-Gum’s character continues expressing his feelings, stating that he will keep the promises that he made to her.

It further shows Jin-Hyeok reminiscing about the moments he has spent with Su-Hyeon. Although he is concerned for her after her father gets arrested, he maintains his distance and waits for her. Meanwhile, Su-Hyeon mends fences with her mother who decides to choose her family over her greed. The final episode also shows Mi-Jin and Dae-Chan’s dating phase while Hye-In confesses to Jin-Hyeok that she has had feelings for him.

The Encounter finale also features Su-Hyeon’s former mother-in-law being sent to prison. On the other hand, Jin-Hyeok’s mother visits Song Hye-Kyo’s character and apologizes for telling the latter to break up with her son. 

K-drama Encounter ending explained: Did Park Bo-Gum & Song Hye-Kyo end up together?

Towards Netflix‘s Encounter ending, Park Bo-Gum’s Jin-Hyeok continues to wait for Su-Hyeon (Song Hye-Kyo). He sends her heels with a note to her office. The message reads, “These are the shoes that brought you to me. And I believe they will bring you to me once again. Recently, you’ve only been walking rugged paths. So I hope these shoes remind you of all the happy steps we took together.”

After reading the note, Su-Hyeon runs to find Jin-Hyeok at the playground they used to meet. A romantic atmosphere is created as it snows outside. With a big smile on their face, they look at each other with pure affection. She apologizes for letting him go, followed by the pair hugging and kissing each other.

Encounter ends with the lead characters walking hand-in-hand. She asks him, “Shall we go to Santiago?” He responds with another question, “Why don’t we go there after we get married?” Hence, they get their happy ending.

K-drama Encounter is currently streaming on Netflix and Viki.
