What happens to Rathna in his childhood?
Lankala Rathnakar is shown as an underdog who rose to power in the land of Godavari. However, it did not happen overnight, and he had to pay a heavy price for it. Rathna always wanted to avenge the death of his father, Geddaraju, with whom he hardly spent time. He was a little boy when his father was killed. It is revealed in Gangs of Godavari that Rathna’s father was a nobleman who worked for Nanaji, a corrupt politician. During the elections, he took a stand for the villagers and did not support Nanaji’s malpractices. As a result, Nanaji framed a story in which Geddaraju turned out to be a villain for the villagers. They burned him alive and gave the torch to his son, Rathna.
As Rathna had always wanted to avenge his father’s death, he took a few shortcuts to gain power in society. He soon earned a lot of money, but he was still far from what he wanted to become. To reach the next level in business, Rathna joined the local sand mafia, Doraswami, also an enemy of Nanaji. He became his right hand and a trustworthy employee. However, Doraswami was not the step that would help Rathna succeed. Therefore, he crossed him and made Nanaji believe he was an ally.
Gangs of Godavari soon took a new turn as Rathna contested the elections against Doraswami and became MLA Tiger. During his attempts to become more powerful, he fell for Nanaji’s daughter, Bujji. Against Nanaji’s will, the two eloped. After coming into power, Rathna asked Bujji to give away Nanaji’s land for building houses for people. When Nanaji, in retaliation, took legal action against him, he accidentally killed him. This made Bujji stand against her husband. When Rathna went to kill Doraswami because he thought he had compelled his wife against him, Bujji shot him. Soon, Bujji learned about Rathna’s dreaded childhood and chose to forgive him. However, she asked Rathna to keep their children away from his business.
Gangs of Godavari ending explained: Does Rathna become a villain for the people of Godavari?
Gangs of Godavari featured another major character, Chinnadora, Doraswami’s son. As Chinnadora returned to the country, he decided to bring Rathna down. To do so, he sought help from Yadu. Furthermore, he helped Yadu win the next elections. The thirst for power led Rathna to commit several violent crimes. In the cycle of violence, many innocent villagers lost their lives. While things were already heated, Yadu attacked Rathna’s house. He then asked Doraswami, Chinnadora, and Yadu for a meeting and warned them not to go after his family by killing Yadu.
At the end of Gangs of Godavari, Rathna believed that even Obu was against him and tried to kill him and his men. However, he soon realized that Obu had tried to save his life. When Rathna attempted to kill Obu, the latter’s son attacked his family and killed Bujji and her son. Chinnadora then killed Obu’s son and his friends and framed Rathna as the murderer. Rathna went to jail, and his friend raised his daughter. When his daughter went to visit her father in prison, he told her the truth. However, he does not tell her that he killed Chinnadora for murdering Obu’s son. He wanted the villagers to live in peace.
