What did director Kamalakannan say about the film?
Director Kamalakannan S. made his directorial debut with Madhubaanakadai in 2012, followed by Vattam. Kamalakannan aims to create films inspired by the subtle influences that shape our lives. He found inspiration in a short story titled Cycle by filmmaker Rasi Alagappan, which he came across 15 years ago. Reflecting on this, the director shared, “Even as I was reading it, I felt it had the right elements to be made into a film: a bicycle, childhood, a summer setting, a father-son bond, and was set in the 1970s. I had no idea who Rasi Azhagappan was back then, but I later discovered he was part of my social circle. So, I approached him, and luckily, he let me adapt it into a film.”
Kamalakannan attempted a three-day test shoot for the film but halted production due to lack of experience. After a decade and having directed two films, he returned to bring Kurangu Pedal to life. The film premiered at the Indian Panorama section of the 53rd International Film Festival of India in 2022.
Highlighting the importance of creating films for children, Kamalakannan stated, “I would categorize children’s films into two – the ones that are made for them and the other, made on them. Among the two, the films that are made on them are very sparse.”
He further said, “When children do not have films that connect with them, they automatically opt for content made for adults.”
As the release date approaches, anticipation mounts for the film’s opening day box office collection. Stay tuned for updates on Kurangu Pedal’s performance at the box office.
