Thank God Ending Explained & Spoilers: How Did Sidharth Malhotra’s Film End?

Thank God is a fantastical comedy-drama film from 2022, helmed by director Indra Kumar. This Indian Hindi-language movie is an official adaptation of the 2009 Danish film Sorte Kugler (What Goes Around). The stellar cast includes Ajay Devgn, Sidharth Malhotra, and Rakul Preet Singh.

Why did Ayaan want to sell his house?

Ayaan Kapoor is a real estate businessman who’s really greedy, selfish, and full of himself. He owes around $ 2 million and can get pretty mean when he’s upset, but he expects everyone to treat him well when he’s in a good mood. His daily routine involves doing shady real estate deals with mostly illegal money, and he goes to a Hanuman temple twice a week to do rituals, but mostly to ask for stuff he wants. After that, he relaxes by watching Nora Fatehi’s dance videos. His business takes a hit during demonetization because he’s got a lot of illegal money. He tries to sell his big house to pay off his debts but can’t find any takers. So, he moves in with his wife, Ruhi, a cop, and his daughter, Pihu.

After a road accident, Ayaan wakes up in Heaven and meets Yamaduta and Chitragupta. They offer him a chance to return to Earth if he plays a game called the Game of Life. He sees his body in the operating room and learns he has five hours during surgery to play the game with his soul.

The game’s rules are simple: there are two containers, one for white balls representing Ayaan’s good deeds and the other for black balls symbolizing his sins. Heaven’s residents act as the audience, voting by placing balls in the containers based on Ayaan’s virtual tasks and behavior. If the black ball container fills up, he’ll go to hell; if the white ball container fills up, he can return to Earth.

What were Ayaan’s sins?

CG begins revealing Ayaan’s sins one by one: his jealousy towards his devoted wife Ruhi, his unhealthy infatuation with his favorite actress, his disregard for the hungry beggar outside the temple, his insincere devotion to Lord Hanuman, his deceit that harmed his sister, his outbursts that trouble Ruhi, his neglect of his daughter, his disrespect towards his mother, and his tendency to focus on people’s flaws rather than their strengths.

When confronted with his jealousy, Ayaan protests, claiming Ruhi is unfit for her job. CG recreates a scenario where Ayaan faces the same situation as Ruhi—a bank hostage crisis. Ayaan fails, arguing it’s a tough spot for anyone. CG then shows Ruhi’s handling of the same crisis with courage and empathy, leaving Ayaan speechless. Each sin is similarly illustrated, highlighting Ayaan’s weaknesses and his futile attempts to justify them.

As the black balls pile up, Ayaan earns white balls by showing love to his mom instead of disrespecting her. He feels relieved. Then, he’s tasked with telling his sister the truth about their childhood home burning down. Ayaan confesses that he falsely blamed her for the fire caused by his rocket during Diwali. His sister, long burdened with guilt, finally learns the truth. Ayaan’s father, upset in Heaven, sends him back to Earth to apologize. Ayaan confesses to his sister and takes responsibility, earning enough white balls to win the game.

Chitragupta rewards Ayaan with ₹18 crores from the sale of his house and allows him to return to Earth. Asked if he’d donate white balls to the next contestant, Ayaan selfishly refuses, eager to leave.

Thank God: Why did Ayaan feel guilty?

Chitragupta catches Ayaan cheating by finding the phone number of his favorite actress in his hand, resulting in a flood of black balls. Then, Ayaan learns that the accident involved his wife Ruhi and daughter Pihu, who are now fighting for their lives. He realizes they’re the next contestants in the game and regrets not donating white balls to them. Watching footage of his family’s kindness, Ayaan feels immense guilt.

The white balls turn black, signifying Ayaan’s fate. But Chitragupta decides to send him back to Earth to experience his personal hell: living without his family. Ayaan awakens from surgery to devastating news—both Ruhi and Pihu are in comas with severe kidney damage. A changed man, Ayaan, offers his kidneys, but the doctor explains he can’t survive without them. Faced with an impossible choice, Ayaan decides to sacrifice himself, signing the donor form and leaving a heartfelt message. He consumes painkillers, ending his life to save his family, his final act of love and redemption.

Ayaan returns to Heaven as a hero, praised by CG, his father, and the residents. He’s blessed with a new chance at life and returns to Earth. In the hospital, he learns Ruhi and Pihu received kidney transplants from an unknown donor wearing a locket with “CG” initials. Overjoyed, Ayaan resolves to lead a virtuous life, prioritizing love and family.

The film ends with Ayaan repairing his ancestral home, giving it to his sister, and adopting the grandson of the woman he once ignored. Ayaan cherishes his family, celebrating them with newfound love and support, determined to make amends for his past mistakes.
