Innovative artist Jenny Hval channels Jess Franco with new track “Female Vampire”.
We’re huge fans of experimental Norwegian vocalist/songwriter/performance artist Jenny Hval. She’s one of the most innovative creators alive. A dynamic performer who sculpts the most challenging, dark, beautiful of bizarre cinematic music.
You can this writer’s interview with Hval from last year, here.
Now, we just got word that Hval is getting set to release her latest album on the Sacred Bones label, BLOOD BITCH (due out September 30th) and Jenny has shared the first single with us.
And it’s called “Female Vampire”.
While touring her previous album, the mesmerizing APOCALYPSE, GIRL, Hval discovered the obsessive, jazz-inspired world of iconic and prolific cult filmmaker Jess Franco and, taking its thematic cues and title from one of Franco’s most famous films, “Female Vampire” was born, the perfect single for what is in essence a concept album about menstruation.
First, more on BLOOD BITCH taken from the press notes:
Co-produced with acumen noise producer Lasse Marhaug, BLOOD BITCH is in many respects a complete 180° from her last album, APOCALYPSE, GIRL in subject matter, execution and production. It is Hval’s most focused album, but the lens is filtered through a gaze which the viewer least expects. Jenny Hval has developed her distinct take on intimate sound since the release of her debut album in 2006. For her last two solo albums, Hval has received thoughtful and widespread international acclaim for her fascinating voice, singular delivery and markedly non-traditional arrangements which incorporate elements of poetry, prose writing, performance art, and film. She eloquently brings to light issues of both male and female gaze.
